Having formed in 2010 under the name “Rice Noodles,” Ma Bang consists of Hong Gang Ye (vocals), Feng Fan (percussion), Fei (wind instruments), Xiao Dao (drums), and A-Yu (bass). They are highly skilled at all kinds of unusual Chinese and Western instruments. On a foundation of numerous folk music instruments and vocal harmonies derived from different ethnicities, they integrate a variety of elements including traditional southern-Chinese mountain songs, caidiao (a type of traditional Chinese opera), the traditional singing style of Liuzhou city and Guangxi provinces, rock, reggae, and ska in the creation of their very own type of world music. Ma Bang’s hearty, resonant sound produced by their striking vocals, bold and unconstrained drumbeats, and resonant Suona serve as their unique trademark.
