Deng Yu-shian: A Taiwanese songwriting pioneer with a simple and elegant style
Deng Yu-shian¡¦s classic songs have been sung in Taiwan for over sixty years. Fan Tsung-pei poetically, romantically and humorously reinterprets them in his own style, with a feel that is sometime classical, sometimes jazzy, and sometimes like the soundtrack to a film, transforming these classic Hoklo songs into instrumentals with a wide variety of moods. On Disc 2, the sounds of the small group combos of the 1930s are reproduced, taking the listener back to the elegant era of phonograph music.
About Deng Yu-shian (1906~1944),
Deng Yu-shian was a master of Taiwanese song whose reputation has endured for nearly a century. His musical talents began to show themselves when he was still a student. He learned all kinds of Western musical instruments from his teachers, including piano, organ and mandolin. Because of his passion for music, he traveled to Japan to study composition. Obtaining a firm grounding in the Western heptatonic scale, he fused it with the traditional pentatonic scale to create his compositional style.
Although Deng was active as a composer for less than ten years, the many songs he left behind for later generations are not only timeless melodies, they also are a symbol of the magnificence of Taiwanese music in the 1930s.
About Fan Tsung-pei,
Fan Tsung-pei is a musician and soundtrack composer who has worked in the fields of film, song and television and whose work is highly esteemed. He is one of contemporary music¡¦s rare talents. He is a composer and cellist, and one of the few Taiwanese artists who has recognized by the Golden Melody Awards, the Golden Bell Awards and the Golden Horse Awards as well as the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Since 1961, Fan Tsung-pei has produced, composed, arranged and performed for countless television series, movies, plays, music albums and concerts. His meticulous and moving musical style is highly representative of the current age.
On Disc 1 of this album, Fan Tsung-pei uses his poetic, spontaneous and sometimes humorous style to transform 12 of Deng Yu-shian¡¦s famous songs into instrumentals in a variety of styles. On Disc 2, he especially recreates the arrangements and playing styles of the small group combos of the 1930s resulting in 18 musical pieces with a retro flavor that bring back the simple, peaceful elegance of that time.
