When I was growing up in Honolulu, my dad always had the car radio tuned to KUMU 1600AM, the easy-listening station.
The Beatles were always in heavy rotation. He also had the sheet music for Here, There and Everywhere, and often used to play it on the organ. It had a beautiful opening melody. Thus, in humble 1970s Hawai¡¥i began my admiration for the British rock-n-roll band from Liverpool.
Now that I am older and have learned more about music, I hear with different ears. What I can appreciate the most about the Beatles today is the depth to their music.
In arranging these beloved hits, things to consider were how they fell on ¡¥ukulele¡Xin what key, how much range, what style or musical treatment, solo, duo, or multiple ¡¥ukulele tracks, and the use of additional accompaniment.
I refrained from using guitar and piano on this album to showcase that the ¡¥ukulele is capable of a range of styles and emotions. I played Pepe Romero ¡¥ukuleles on the entire album, including a six string ¡§guitar-lele¡¨ on Nowhere Man. I featured the Ohana bass ¡¥ukulele on songs like In My Life, Blackbird, and Golden Slumbers because it has a beautiful melodic voice in its higher registers and an acoustic tone like that of a cello.
I always have my ukulele with me here, there, and everywhere. Almost 88% of the time when I practice, I¡¦ll find myself playing a medley of the Beatles tunes¡Xalmost all of which are on this album. It brings me so much joy to be able to share with you some of my favorite songs as I would play them at home, in cars during road trips, and best of all, with a little help from my friends.
