In creating this album, Matthew Lien draws his inspiration from the plains of Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Asian island of Taiwan, blending together these musical influences with passions and concerns. In 'Touching the Earth', ethnic world instruments come together with contemporary instruments to celebrate the human spirit and the natural world. The majesty of mountainous landscapes and the simplicity of a flower floating on a stream are all explored within this musical journey. And within this imagery is also a voice of concern for the natural world.
The rousing choral voices of Ghana, the call of Uilleann Bagpipes, and the
mournful lament of the Armenian Duhduk carry the listener on a musical
exodus. This is a voyage not only through the a musical world, but also
through the emotions of love, pain, celebration and compassion.
