The Rukai folk song can be classified into monophonic and polyphonic ballads. Monophonic ballads, such as children's rhymes, are performed in solo or unison. Polyphonic ballads, on the other hand, are mostly two-part polyphony, sometimes three-part, based on ostinato. The instruments used among the Rukais are reed, the musical bow and the bamboo flutes, among which the two-tubed vertical flute and the nose flute are most wide-spread.
