In 1943, Takatomo Kurosawa published his recording of the past but song of the Bunun tribe and , because of its unique singing style, complicated form, and semitonal harmonic structure, this song was recognized as unique among all ethnic groups in the world, arousing a sensational response from the ethnomusicological community.
The music of the Bunun preserves a rare and ancient style of singing. Seldom using instrumental accompaniment or dance movements, Bunun music embodies their aesthetic of bringing out harmony and wholeness in the social structure while emphasizing restraint and peace of mind.
This recording includes more than a dozen Bunun songs, collected by Mr. Wu, Rung-Shun of the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan, and is an album that deserves preservation.
