Wei Hai-ming

Wei Hai-ming was an apprentice at an early age in the Hai Guang Peking Opera Troupe and later became an outstanding performer. Her extraordinary results come not only from her artistic stage appearance, voice and intelligence but also from committing more than 20 years to performing, rehearsing continuously, and taking on hundreds of roles to become a star in this field.

In 1982 Wei Hai-ming went to H.K. to see performances of Mei Baojiu by the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe and Tong zhiling by the Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe. She was astonished at her reaction to the shows: ¡§So, this is how Peking Opera is performed! Right then, I decided to restart my career.¡¨ This incident became a turning point in her life and in 1991 she went to Beijing and became a personal student of Mei Bao-jiu. From then on she was confident that the Mei-Style approach would be the direction she would follow. Soon she took on the leading role of presenting Mei-Style performances in Taiwan.

In 1996 Wei Hai-ming was honored as one of the ¡§Outstanding Young People of the World¡¨, becoming the first female to receive this honor. Since then Wei has devoted her life to developing and promoting Peking Opera. She has also taught at the Taipei National University of the Arts, Theater Arts Institute and Da-An Community College. Her performances have been widely seen in Taiwan and internationally.
